    Breast Procedures

    Breast Augmentation

    Concern

For women that are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts, an augmentation is an effective option. Breast augmentation is a procedure that enlarges the female breast by implanting silicone cushions under the breast glands. Though silicone implants have been proven to be safe, there are differences in the quality of available implants. It is therefore essential to only use high-quality implants in order to minimize the chance of long-term complications. Modern implants offer protection against leakage by means of “cohesive silicone gel”. That means that in case of the implant ruptures, no silicone will leak out. If patients opt not to have silicone implants can choose an implant that is filled with saline. However, clinical studies have shown that there are no fewer health risks in comparison with cohesive gel implants. The texturized surface of the implants reduces the chance of developing a capsular contraction (A reaction of the tissue surrounding the implant in the breast which can lead to pain, discomfort, and an irregular shape of the breast) There are two different types of implants on the market: The anatomical shaped implants and the round implants. Anatomical shape implants are used primarily in the reconstruction of the breast after breast cancer.

The implant can be positioned in front of or behind the breast muscle. Placing the implant behind the muscle offers several advantages such as a lower chance of the long-term complication “capsular fibrosis”. Also, a more natural appearance can be achieved, especially in women with very small breasts.

    Treatment

This very standard and effective procedure performed under general anesthesia. A drain might be placed in the wound to collect fluid that will be removed on the first day after surgery.

    Hospital Admission:                    Outpatient

    Recuperation Time:                     3 weeks

Post Surgery: After the first dressing change two days after surgery, the patient will begin to use a post operative bra, preferably one with an opening at the front with broad elastic band.

    Breast Lift

    Concern:

After weight loss or breast feeding, most women notice a change in the shape of their breasts. Hanging breasts are due to the loss of elasticity of the breast skin and, to a certain extent, weakness of the chest muscle.

    Treatment:

To lift the breast, the skin-envelope has to be reduced, without reducing the volume of the breast gland. This very common procedure is performed under general anesthesia with suture removal after 12 days.

    Hospital Admission:              Out patient

    Recuperation Time:               3 weeks

Post Surgery:                          After dressings are changed on the second day after surgery, the patient will begin to use a post operative bra, preferably one with an opening at the front with broad elastic bands.

    Breast Reduction

    Concern:

Extremely large breasts can lead to severe physical problems such as bad posture, chronic back pain and headaches. In many cases, patients also suffer from rashes beneath the breast. Psychologically, affected women can develop low self-esteem, depression and social phobias.

    Treatment:

In order to reduce breast fat volume, glandular tissue and skin must also be reduced. This very common procedure is performed under general anesthesia, with suture removal after 12 days.

    Hospital Admission:                     0 – 1 night

    Recuperation Time:                      3 weeks

Post Surgery:                                   After dressings are changed on the second day after surgery, the patient will begin to use a post operative bra, preferably one with an opening at the front with broad elastic bands.

    Breast Reconstruction

    Concern:

After a surgical removal of a tumor from the female breast or amputation (mastectomy) of the entire breast as a result of cancer, the breasts can be reconstructed.

    Treatment:

The breasts can be reconstructed using one of the following surgical techniques under general anesthesia.

    1) The substitution of human tissue with silicone implants.

    2) The utilization of tissue from other parts of the body (LD Flap Procedure)

    3) The harvesting of tissue from the lower abdomen and microsurgical transplantation to the chest (DIEP Flap Procedure)

Hospital Admission:        0 – 4 nights depending on treatment selection

    Recuperation Time:           4 weeks

Post Surgery:                       After dressings are changed on the second day after surgery, the patient will begin to use a post surgical bra, preferably one with an opening at the with broad elastic bands.

    Areola Reduction

    Concern:

The size of the areola differs in every individual.  Large areolas very often are perceived to be less attractive.

    Treatment:

With a small surgical procedure, the size of the areola can be reduced under local anesthesia leaving a subtle scar around the areola. Sutures can be removed in 10-12 days

    Hospital Admission:               Outpatient

    Recuperation Time:               1-2 weeks

Post Surgery:                           Wear a post surgical bra and apply a compress on each breast for 2 days.

    DIEP Flap Breast Recontruction

    Concern:

After a surgical removal of a tumor from the female breast or amputation (mastectomy) of the entire breast as a result of cancer, the breasts can be reconstructed.

The DIEP Flap Procedure is a technique in which skin and tissue (no muscles) is taken from the lower abdomen in order to recreate the breast. The post-operative results of this procedure are, in comparison to other techniques, the most natural and there are no concerns about problems with implants later on in your life. Above the reconstruction of the breast, women enjoy the bonus effect of a tummy tuck (tightening of the abdomen after removal of skin and fat on the lower abdomen). One of the great advantages of this technique is that the abdominal muscle remains untouched and will not be functionally impaired.

    Treatment:

The DIEP flap surgery is performed under general anesthesia and the mean operation time is approximately 8 hours.

    Hospital Admission:               4 days

    Recuperation Time:               4 -6 weeks

Post Surgery:                          Post-operative supervision is extended to ensure a sufficient blood supply to the transplanted tissue.

    Male Breast Reduction

    Concern:

In men, pronounced breast tissue can lead to severe body image problems. Psychologically, affected men can develop low self-esteem, depression and social phobias.

    Treatment:

In order to reduce breast fat volume, glandular tissue must also be reduced. This very common procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

    Hospital Admission:                     Outpatient

    Recuperation Time:                      1 week

Post Surgery:                                   Dressing is changed on the second day after surgery, the patient will begin to use a compression vest garment, preferably one with an opening at the front.
